A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in ntpd up to 4.2.5p2/4.3.24 (Network Management Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Configuration Handler. The manipulation with the input value NUL
leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 06/29/2015 by Aleksis Kauppinen with Codenomicon as June 2015 NTP Security Vulnerability Announcement as confirmed release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.ntp.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-5146 since 06/29/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85751 (Amazon Linux AMI : ntp (ALAS-2015-593)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350259 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for ntp: AL2012-2016-109). The advisory illustrates:
To summarize, if: - remote configuration of ntpd is enabled (it's disabled by default), - and an attacker knows the remote configuration password, - and has access to a computer that is allowed to send remote configuration requests to ntpd, the attacker can send a carefully-crafted packet to ntpd that will cause ntpd to crash.
Upgrading to version 4.2.8p3-RC1 or 4.3.25 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:
Be prudent when deciding what IP addresses can perform remote configuration of an ntpd instance.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (85751), SecurityFocus (BID 75589†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1034168†). Further details are available at kb.cert.org. The entries VDB-78853, VDB-78937, VDB-104358 and VDB-105145 are pretty similar.
