A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component CoreMedia Playback. CoreMedia Playback in Apple iOS before 9.2, OS X before 10.11.2, and tvOS before 9.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a malformed media file.
The weakness was released 12/08/2015 with Apple as HT205637 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-7074 since 09/16/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues existed in the processing of malformed media files. These issues were addressed through improved memory handling.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87314 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124389 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.2 and Security Update 2015-008 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-12-08-3)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
