The File Bookmark component in Apple OS X before 10.11.2 allows attackers to bypass a sandbox protection mechanism for app scoped bookmarks via a crafted pathname.

The weakness was published 12/08/2015 by Jeonghoon Shin (beist) with Apple as HT205637 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7071 since 09/16/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:

A path validation issue existed in app scoped bookmarks. This was addressed through improved environment sanitization.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87314 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124389 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.2 and Security Update 2015-008 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-12-08-3)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
