Sun MySQL up to 4.0.20 symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun MySQL up to 4.0.20 (Database Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The mysqlhotcopy script in mysql 4.0.20 and earlier, when using the scp method from the mysql-server package, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on temporary files.

The bug was discovered 08/18/2004. The weakness was presented 08/18/2004 by Jeroen van Wolffelaar (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0457 since 05/06/2004. The attack needs to approached within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 1 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15599 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : MySQL (MDKSA-2004:119)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at debian.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17030) and Tenable (15599). See 799 for similar entry.
