Mozilla Firefox 42 Cookie Vertical Tab information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 42 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component Cookie Handler. The manipulation as part of a Vertical Tab leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Mozilla Firefox before 43.0 stores cookies containing vertical tab characters, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information by reading HTTP Cookie headers.

The weakness was presented 12/15/2015 by musicDespiteEverything as MFSA2015-137 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7208 since 09/16/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:

Security researcher musicDespiteEverything reported an issue when ASCII code 11 for vertical tab is stored in a cookie in violation of RFC6265. This may result in incorrect cookie handling by servers, resulting in the potential ability to set cookie values and read cookie data from users in concert with some web servers if the vertical tab character is mishandled during parsing.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87385 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (2c2d1c39-1396-459a-91f5-ca03ee7c64c6)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168483 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (openSUSE-SU-2016:0306-1)).

Upgrading to version 43 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87385), SecurityFocus (BID 79280†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-55291†). See VDB-79805, VDB-79806, VDB-79807 and VDB-79810 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
