Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox 42 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown function of the component WebExtension API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The WebExtension APIs in Mozilla Firefox before 43.0 allow remote attackers to gain privileges, and possibly obtain sensitive information or conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, via a crafted web site.
The weakness was released 12/15/2015 by Kris Maglione (musicDespiteEverything) as MFSA2015-148 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-7223 since 09/16/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Mozilla developer Kris Maglione reported a mechanism where WebExtension APIs could be used to escalate privilege. This could allow arbitrary web content to execute code with the privileges of a particular WebExtension when using these API calls. Depending on the privileges of the extension used, this could result in personal information theft and cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, including theft of browser cookies. This is mitigated by the requirement to have a WebExtension installed that is vulnerable to this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87385 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (2c2d1c39-1396-459a-91f5-ca03ee7c64c6)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124406 (Mozilla Firefox Multiple Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2015-134 and MFSA 2015-149)).
Upgrading to version 43 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
