A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.3.3 (Operating System). This affects the function pptp_bind/pptp_connect
of the file drivers/net/ppp/pptp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Kernel Memory). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) pptp_bind and (2) pptp_connect functions in drivers/net/ppp/pptp.c in the Linux kernel through 4.3.3 do not verify an address length, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory and bypass the KASLR protection mechanism via a crafted application.
The weakness was shared 12/28/2015 by Marcus Meissner (Website). The advisory is shared at lkml.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-8569. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87741 (Debian DSA-3434-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168771 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1203-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (87741). The entries 8569, 78541, 79223 and 79228 are related to this item.
