The dissect_ber_GeneralizedTime function in epan/dissectors/packet-ber.c in the BER dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.9 and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 improperly checks an sscanf return value, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was shared 01/04/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-8720 since 01/03/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87824 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.9 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175659 (Debian Security Update for wireshark (DSA 3505-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.9 or 2.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
