Prosody up to 0.9.8 mod_http_files File path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Prosody up to 0.9.8 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component mod_http_files. The manipulation with the input value .. leads to a path traversal vulnerability (File). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The software uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the software does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.

The weakness was presented 01/12/2016 by Thijs Alkemade (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.prosody.im. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-1231 since 12/27/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87829 (Debian DSA-3439-1 : prosody - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context local. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124593 (Fedora Security Update for prosody (FEDORA-2016-e289f41b76)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
