The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the HTTP file-serving module (mod_http_files) in Prosody 0.9.x before 0.9.9 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in an unspecified path.

The weakness was presented 01/12/2016 by Thijs Alkemade (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.prosody.im. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-1231 since 12/27/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87829 (Debian DSA-3439-1 : prosody - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124593 (Fedora Security Update for prosody (FEDORA-2016-e289f41b76)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
