FreeBSD 9.3/10.1 SCTP Packet ICMPv5 Packet null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in FreeBSD 9.3/10.1 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code block of the component SCTP Packet Handler. The manipulation as part of a ICMPv5 Packet leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The weakness was released 01/14/2016 by Jonathan T. Looney as FreeBSD-SA-16:01.sctp as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-1879 since 01/13/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A remote, unauthenticated attacker can reliably trigger a kernel panic in a vulnerable system running IPv6. Any kernel compiled with both IPv6 and SCTP support is vulnerable. There is no requirement to have an SCTP socket open. IPv4 ICMP processing is not impacted by this vulnerability.

A public exploit has been developed by ptsecurity and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92915 (FreeBSD : FreeBSD -- SCTP ICMPv6 error message vulnerability (78f06a6c-600a-11e6-a6c3-14dae9d210b8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124628 (FreeBSD Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 22646.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (109641), Tenable (92915) and Exploit-DB (39305). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 80317, 80318, 80319 and 92958.
