ntp 4.2.8p5 Key Checker 7pk security

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in ntp 4.2.8p5 (Network Management Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Key Checker. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a 7pk security vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-254. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

NTP 4.x before 4.2.8p6 and 4.3.x before 4.3.90 do not verify peer associations of symmetric keys when authenticating packets, which might allow remote attackers to conduct impersonation attacks via an arbitrary trusted key, aka a "skeleton key."

The weakness was published 01/19/2016 with Cisco as confirmed security notice (Website). The advisory is shared at support.ntp.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-7974 since 10/23/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88054 (Network Time Protocol Daemon (ntpd) 3.x / 4.x < 4.2.8p6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168789 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for ntp (SUSE-SU-2016:1278-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.2.8p6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (110019) and Tenable (88054). Similar entries are available at 80644, 80646, 80647 and 80648.
