Mozilla Firefox 43 WebGL BufferSubData memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Mozilla Firefox 43 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects the function BufferSubData of the component WebGL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the BufferSubData function in Mozilla Firefox before 44.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted WebGL content.

The weakness was released 01/26/2016 by Aki Helin with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as MFSA2016-03 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1935 since 01/19/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2024). The advisory points out:

Security researcher Aki Helin used the Address Sanitizer tool to find a buffer overflow write when rendering some WebGL content. This leads to a potentially exploitable crash.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88419 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox (CESA-2016:0071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157140 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for thunderbird (ELSA-2016-0258)).

Upgrading to version 44 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88419), SecurityFocus (BID 81952†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56969†). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.mozilla.org. Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-80684. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
