The weakness was disclosed 01/28/2016 by Donghai Zhu as Bug 1296060 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-1714 since 01/12/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88506 (RHEL 6 : qemu-kvm-rhev (RHSA-2016:0081)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168962 (OpenSuSE Security Update for qemu (openSUSE-SU-2016:1750-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
