CloudBees Jenkins up to 1.639/1.625.1 Plugins Manager data authenticity

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in CloudBees Jenkins up to 1.639/1.625.1 (Continuous Integration Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Plugins Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data authenticity vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-345. The product does not sufficiently verify the origin or authenticity of data, in a way that causes it to accept invalid data. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Plugins Manager in CloudBees Jenkins before 1.640 and LTS before 1.625.2 does not verify checksums for plugin files referenced in update site data, which makes it easier for man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted plugin.

The weakness was disclosed 02/03/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at wiki.jenkins-ci.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-7539 since 09/29/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89428 (Fedora 23 : jenkins-1.625.3-1.fc23 (2015-d7e5461dbf)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11576 (Jenkins Server Multiple Remote Security Vulnerabilities (Jenkins Security Advisory 2015-12-09)).

Upgrading to version 1.640 or 1.625.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (89428). The entries VDB-80779, VDB-80780 and VDB-80781 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
