A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.3.3 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function sco_sock_bind
of the file net/bluetooth/sco.c of the component KASLR. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The sco_sock_bind function in net/bluetooth/sco.c in the Linux kernel before 4.3.4 does not verify an address length, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory and bypass the KASLR protection mechanism via a crafted application.
The weakness was released 02/08/2016 by Marcus Meissner (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8575 since 12/15/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87738 (Debian DLA-378-1 : linux-2.6 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168771 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1203-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.3.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (87738). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 8569, 78541, 79223 and 79228.
