A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.14 (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function kadm5_modify_principal of the component kadmin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was presented 02/03/2016 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8630 since 12/23/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88581 (Debian DSA-3466-1 : krb5 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350010 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for krb5: ALAS-2016-691).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published 22 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 23817.
