GTK+ up to 3.9.7 Image File gdk/gdkcairo.c gdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GTK+ up to 3.9.7. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function gdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf of the file gdk/gdkcairo.c of the component Image File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the gdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf function in gdk/gdkcairo.c in GTK+ before 3.9.8, as used in eom, gnome-photos, eog, gambas3, thunar, pinpoint, and possibly other applications, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a large image file, which triggers a large memory allocation.

The weakness was disclosed 02/17/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7447 since 02/09/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88810 (Debian DLA-419-1 : gtk+2.0 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 296003 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 10.5.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 3.9.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88810), SecurityFocus (BID 83239†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56656†). The entries VDB-79001, VDB-81199, VDB-82392 and VDB-88089 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
