pi.c in OpenJPEG, as used in PDFium in Google Chrome before 48.0.2564.109, does not validate a certain precision value, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted JPEG 2000 image in a PDF document, related to the opj_pi_next_rpcl, opj_pi_next_pcrl, and opj_pi_next_cprl functions.
The weakness was shared 02/21/2016 by Mariusz Mlynski with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1628 since 01/11/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/08/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88869 (Debian DSA-3486-1 : chromium-browser - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176192 (Debian Security Update for openjpeg2 (DSA 4013-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 22675.
