Wireshark 2.0.0/2.0.1 LBMC Dissector packet-lbmc.c dissect_nhdr_extopt input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark 2.0.0/2.0.1 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dissect_nhdr_extopt of the file epan/dissectors/packet-lbmc.c of the component LBMC Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dissect_nhdr_extopt function in epan/dissectors/packet-lbmc.c in the LBMC dissector in Wireshark 2.0.x before 2.0.2 does not validate length values, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer overflow and application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was presented 02/28/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2528 since 02/19/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89048 (FreeBSD : wireshark -- multiple vulnerabilities (45117749-df55-11e5-b2bd-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124753 (Wireshark Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2016-01 to wnpa-sec-2016-18)).

Upgrading to version 2.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (111115) and Tenable (89048). See 81096, 81097, 81098 and 81099 for similar entries.
