A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1r/1.0.2f (Network Encryption Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function doapr_outch
of the file crypto/bio/b_print.c of the component ASN.1 Data Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The doapr_outch function in crypto/bio/b_print.c in OpenSSL 1.0.1 before 1.0.1s and 1.0.2 before 1.0.2g does not verify that a certain memory allocation succeeds, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write or memory consumption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a long string, as demonstrated by a large amount of ASN.1 data, a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-0799.
The weakness was shared 03/03/2016 by Guido Vranken as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.openssl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2842 since 03/03/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/09/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89842 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssl (ALAS-2016-661) (DROWN) (SLOTH)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124648 (Red Hat Update for openssl security (RHSA-2016:0722)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.1s or 1.0.2g eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (89842). The entries 81112, 81138, 81139 and 81142 are related to this item.
