GNU Samba up to 2.2.10 FindNextPrintChangeNotify denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GNU Samba (File Transfer Software). This affects the function FindNextPrintChangeNotify. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

smbd in Samba before 2.2.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) by sending a FindNextPrintChangeNotify request without a previous FindFirstPrintChangeNotify, as demonstrated by the SMB client in Windows XP SP2.

The bug was discovered 08/26/2004. The weakness was presented 08/12/2004 by Craig Huegen with Samba Team (Website). The advisory is shared at us1.samba.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0829 since 09/02/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14381 (Samba smbd FindNextPrintChangeNotify() Request Remote DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Denial of Service and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 2.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at us1.samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15984. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31580.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17138) and Tenable (14381). Further details are available at auscert.org.au.
