ISC BIND up to 9.10.3-P3 named resolver.c Cookie Option input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

resolver.c in named in ISC BIND 9.10.x before 9.10.3-P4, when DNS cookies are enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (INSIST assertion failure and daemon exit) via a malformed packet with more than one cookie option.

The weakness was disclosed 03/09/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at kb.isc.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-2088 since 01/26/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90000 (ISC BIND 9 resolver.c Multiple DNS Cookie Packet Handling DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15004 (ISC BIND Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (AA-01351, AA-01352, AA-01353)).

Upgrading to version 9.10.3-P4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 24094.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (90000), SecurityFocus (BID 84290†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57178†). The entries VDB-8997 and VDB-79802 are pretty similar.
