The Top Sites feature in Apple Safari before 9.1 mishandles cookie storage, which makes it easier for remote web servers to track users via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 03/18/2016 by Alexios Fakos (WoofWagly) with n.runs AG as HT206171 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-1772 since 01/13/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. A cookie storage issue existed in the Top Sites page. This issue was addressed through improved state management.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124837 (Apple Safari 9.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-03-21-6)).
Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
