The weakness was disclosed 03/21/2016 with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as HT206167 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-1775 since 01/12/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/12/2024). The advisory points out:

A memory corruption issue existed in the processing of font files. This issue was addressed through improved input validation.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90309 (Apple TV < 9.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124842 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.4 and Security Update 2016-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-03-21-5)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
