Trustwave ModSecurity 2.7.0/2.7.1/2.7.2 XML Parser input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Trustwave ModSecurity 2.7.0/2.7.1/2.7.2. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the component XML Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

ModSecurity before 2.7.3 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files, send HTTP requests to intranet servers, or cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via an XML external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, aka an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability.

The weakness was published 03/22/2013 by Timur Yunusov and Alexey Osipov with Positive Technologies Research Team as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1915 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67127 (ModSecurity < 2.7.3 XML External Entity (XXE) Data Parsing Arbitrary File Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Firewalls. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166401 (OpenSuSE Security Update for apache2-mod_security2 (openSUSE-SU-2013:1342-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83170) and Tenable (67127). Similar entries are available at 6798, 8314, 8904 and 61374.
