of the file sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the getaddrinfo function in sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c in GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.17 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a (1) hostname or (2) IP address that triggers a large number of domain conversion results.
The weakness was disclosed 04/03/2013 as 52817 as not defined advisory (Secunia). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1914 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83588 (SUSE SLED10 / SLES10 Security Update : glibc (SUSE-SU-2013:0858-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350474 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for glibc: ALAS-2013-270).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceware.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83213) and Tenable (83588). The entries 10293 and 10294 are pretty similar.
