A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in WebkitGTK+ 1.8.1 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function RenderBlock::splitTablePartsAroundChild of the file WebCore/rendering/RenderBlock.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Google Chrome before 17.0.963.65 does not properly perform casts of unspecified variables during the splitting of anonymous blocks, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unknown other impact via a crafted document.

The weakness was disclosed 02/19/2012 by Chamal De Silva (miaubiz) with Google as 108194 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at trac.webkit.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3037 since 08/09/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58210 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (99aef698-66ed-11e1-8288-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120502 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-09-12-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73648) and Tenable (58210). The entries 4654, 4645, 4650 and 4698 are pretty similar.
