The weakness was disclosed 04/09/2013 with VUPEN Security as APSB13-11 as confirmed bulletin (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Adobe. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-2555 since 03/10/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/08/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65909 (Adobe AIR 3.x <= 3.6.0.6090 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB13-11)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166149 (SUSE Security Update for flash-player (openSUSE-SU-2013:0672-1)).

Upgrading to version 11.7.700.169 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at adobe.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12854.
