A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU C Library up to 2.22 (Software Library). This vulnerability affects the function nan/nanf/nanl
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) before 2.23 allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long argument to the (1) nan, (2) nanf, or (3) nanl function.
The weakness was presented 04/19/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-9761 since 01/18/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88599 (Debian DLA-411-2 : eglibc regression update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196484 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Eglibc, Glibc Vulnerabilities (USN-2985-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.23 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88599) and SecurityFocus (BID 83306†). See VDB-10583, VDB-73929, VDB-75092 and VDB-79344 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
