Linux Kernel up to 3.16 USB Device Descriptor wacom_sys.c wacom_probe null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.16 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function wacom_probe of the file drivers/input/tablet/wacom_sys.c of the component USB Device Descriptor Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The wacom_probe function in drivers/input/tablet/wacom_sys.c in the Linux kernel before 3.17 allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via a crafted endpoints value in a USB device descriptor.

The weakness was shared 04/27/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-3139 since 03/12/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by OpenSource Security and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 34 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90531 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1019-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157985 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2019-4644)).

Upgrading to version 3.17 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (90531) and Exploit-DB (39538). The entries 82953, 88369, 91456 and 107092 are related to this item.
