Apache Subversion up to 1.8.15/1.9.3 mod_authz_svn mod_authz_svn.c null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apache Subversion up to 1.8.15/1.9.3 (Versioning Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the file mod_authz_svn/mod_authz_svn.c of the component mod_authz_svn. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2016 by Ivan Zhakov with VisualSVN as CVE-2016-2168-advisory.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at subversion.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2168 since 01/29/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90802 (Slackware 14.0 / 14.1 / current : subversion (SSA:2016-121-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context local. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175729 (Debian Security Update for subversion (DSA 3561-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:

status = apr_uri_parse(r->pool, dest_uri, &parsed_dest_uri);
if (status)
    ap_log_rerror(APLOG_MARK, APLOG_ERR, status, r,
                  "Invalid URI in Destination header");
    return HTTP_BAD_REQUEST;
if (!parsed_dest_uri.path)
    ap_log_rerror(APLOG_MARK, APLOG_ERR, 0, r,
                  "Invalid URI in Destination header");
    return HTTP_BAD_REQUEST;

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 89320), SecurityTracker (ID 1035707) and Tenable (90802). The entry 83076 is pretty similar.
