sudoedit (aka sudo -e) in sudo 1.6.8 opens a temporary file with root privileges, which allows local users to read arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the temporary file before quitting sudoedit.
The weakness was released 09/20/2004 by Reznic Valery (Website). The advisory is available at sudo.ws. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-1689 since 02/21/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The exploit is shared for download at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52382 (AIX 530010 : U840518), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
