Linux Kernel 3.9 net/ax25/af_ax25.c ax25_recvmsg information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 3.9 (Operating System). This affects the function ax25_recvmsg of the file net/ax25/af_ax25.c of the component Linux Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The ax25_recvmsg function in net/ax25/af_ax25.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9-rc7 does not initialize a certain data structure, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted recvmsg or recvfrom system call.

The weakness was disclosed 04/06/2013 as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). It is possible to read the advisory at lkml.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3223 since 04/21/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66431 (Debian DSA-2668-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166437 (OpenSuSE Security Update for 3.0.80 Kernel Update (openSUSE-SU-2013:1187-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.9-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83704), Tenable (66431), SecurityFocus (BID 59380†), OSVDB (92657†) and Secunia (SA53411†). The entries VDB-7779, VDB-7812, VDB-7933 and VDB-7934 are pretty similar.
