A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 3.9 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function irda_recvmsg
of the file net/irda/af_irda.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The irda_recvmsg_dgram function in net/irda/af_irda.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9-rc7 does not initialize a certain length variable, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted recvmsg or recvfrom system call.
The weakness was disclosed 04/07/2013 by Mathias Krause as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). The advisory is shared at lkml.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3228 since 04/21/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66431 (Debian DSA-2668-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166553 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2013:1832-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.9-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83690) and Tenable (66431). The entries 7933, 7934, 8173 and 8485 are pretty similar.
