A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 3.9 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function caif_seqpkt_recvmsg
of the file net/caif/caif_socket.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The caif_seqpkt_recvmsg function in net/caif/caif_socket.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9-rc7 does not initialize a certain length variable, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted recvmsg or recvfrom system call.
The weakness was presented 04/07/2013 by Mathias Krause as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). The advisory is available at lkml.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3227 since 04/21/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66486 (Debian DSA-2669-1 : linux - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166437 (OpenSuSE Security Update for 3.0.80 Kernel Update (openSUSE-SU-2013:1187-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.9-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
