Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component SMTP/IMAP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in MDaemon 6.5.1 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a long (1) SAML, SOML, SEND, or MAIL command to the SMTP server or (2) LIST command to the IMAP server.
The bug was discovered 09/22/2004. The weakness was presented 09/23/2004 by D_BuG with SecurityLab.RU (Website). The advisory is shared at securiteam.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1546 since 02/20/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by D_BuG and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14804 (MDaemon < 6.5.2 Multiple Remote Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems and running in the context r.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at altn.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3654. In this case the pattern SOML
is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3920.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17477), Tenable (14804) and Exploit-DB (473). See 82167 for similar entry.
