Alt-N MDaemon up to 6.5.1 SMTP/IMAP Server memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Alt-N MDaemon up to 6.5.1 (Mail Server Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component SMTP/IMAP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in MDaemon 6.5.1 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a long (1) SAML, SOML, SEND, or MAIL command to the SMTP server or (2) LIST command to the IMAP server.

The bug was discovered 09/22/2004. The weakness was presented 09/23/2004 by D_BuG with SecurityLab.RU (Website). The advisory is shared at securiteam.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1546 since 02/20/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by D_BuG and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14804 (MDaemon < 6.5.2 Multiple Remote Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems and running in the context r.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at altn.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3654. In this case the pattern SOML is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3920.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17477), Tenable (14804) and Exploit-DB (473). See 82167 for similar entry.
