A vulnerability was found in SourceFire ClamAV up to 0.97.7 (Anti-Malware Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function cli_scanpe of the file libclamav/pe.c. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Integer underflow in the cli_scanpe function in pe.c in ClamAV before 0.97.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a skewed offset larger than the size of the PE section in a UPX packed executable, which triggers an out-of-bounds read.

The weakness was shared 04/23/2013 by Felix Groebert with Google Security Team as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at freecode.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2020 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/10/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75004 (openSUSE Security Update : clamav (openSUSE-SU-2013:0881-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121462 (ClamAV Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 0.97.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13010.
