Details
A vulnerability was found in Huawei AR Router 150, 200, 1200, 2200 and 3200 V200R001/V200R002/V200R003 (Router Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component SNMPv3. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Huawei AR 150, 200, 1200, 2200, and 3200 routers, when SNMPv3 is enabled, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (device crash) via malformed SNMPv3 requests that leverage unspecified overflow issues.
The bug was discovered 02/11/2013. The weakness was released 04/25/2013 by Roberto Paleari with Emaze Networks S.p.A as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at huawei.com. The public release was coordinated with Huawei. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4631 since 06/20/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Roberto Paleari and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 73 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77334 (Huawei AR Router Remote Command Execution (HWNSIRT-2013-0427)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version V200R003C01SPC300 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.huawei.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
