Linux Kernel up to 3.8.10 include/net/scm.h scm_set_cred access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.8.10 (Operating System). This issue affects the function scm_set_cred of the file include/net/scm.h. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The scm_set_cred function in include/net/scm.h in the Linux kernel before 3.8.11 uses incorrect uid and gid values during credentials passing, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application.

The weakness was disclosed 04/20/2013 by Andy Lutomirski as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1979 since 02/19/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Andy Lutomirski and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at openwall.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78650 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : Linux kernel (SAT Patch Numbers 9746 / 9749 / 9751)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167302 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:1319-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.8.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (78650). The entries 8176, 8499, 8500 and 8568 are pretty similar.
