RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 10.5 6.0.12.1040 heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 10.5 6.0.12.1040 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in pnen3260.dll in RealPlayer 8 through 10.5 (6.0.12.1040) and earlier, and RealOne Player 1 or 2 on Windows or Mac OS, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a SMIL file and a .rm movie file with a large length field for the data chunk, which leads to a heap-based buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 09/28/2004. The weakness was released 10/01/2004 by Marc Maiffret (DiGiT) with eEye as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1481 since 02/13/2005. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at eeye.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15395 (RealPlayer Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (2004-09-28)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38320 (RealNetworks RealOne Player and RealPlayer Remote Vulnerabilities).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at service.real.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3470. In this case the pattern .RMF is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3310.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17549) and Tenable (15395). Further details are available at securiteam.com. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 707, 855, 856 and 854.
