A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat up to 7.0.29 (Application Server Software). It has been declared as problematic. Apache Tomcat 6.x before 6.0.37 and 7.x before 7.0.30 does not properly handle chunk extensions in chunked transfer coding, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by streaming data.
The weakness was published 05/10/2013 by Mark Thomas with Oracle as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3544 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73678 (RHEL 6 : tomcat6 (RHSA-2014:0429)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350756 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for tomcat-native: AL2012-2015-076).
Upgrading to version 7.0.30 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
