Untrusted search path vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Acrobat before 11.0.16, Acrobat and Acrobat Reader DC Classic before 15.006.30172, and Acrobat and Acrobat Reader DC Continuous before 15.016.20039 on Windows and OS X allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse resource in an unspecified directory, a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-1087 and CVE-2016-4106.

The weakness was presented 05/05/2016 by Eric Lawrence as APSB16-14 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at helpx.adobe.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-1090 since 12/22/2015. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1574.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91096 (Adobe Acrobat < 11.0.16 / 15.006.30172 / 15.016.20039 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB16-14)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123265 (Adobe Acrobat and Reader Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB16-14)).

Upgrading to version 11.0.16 or 15.006.30172 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
