Linux Kernel Porpagated Copy null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Porpagated Copy Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was published 05/11/2016 by Adam Maris as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4581 since 05/11/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The following code is the reason for this vulnerability:

if (p == dest_master || IS_MNT_MARKED(p)) {
   while (last_dest->mnt_master != p) {
      last_source = last_source->mnt_master;
      last_dest = last_source->mnt_parent;
   }
   if (!peers(n, last_dest)) {
      last_source = last_source->mnt_master;
      last_dest = last_source->mnt_parent;
   }
}

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91425 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-2989-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157314 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for kernel (ELSA-2016-2574)-Deprecated).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (113159) and Tenable (91425). Similar entries are available at 81887, 82951, 82953 and 82963.
