A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component PUB File Handler. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 does not properly check table range data, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Publisher file, aka "Publisher Invalid Range Check Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2013 by Will Dorman with CERT as MS13-042 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1322 since 01/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66417 (MS13-042: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2830397)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110210 (Multiple Microsoft Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-042)).

Applying the patch MS13-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (66417). nakedsecurity.sophos.com is providing further details. The entries 8711, 8712, 8713 and 8714 are pretty similar.
