The client in OpenAFS before 1.6.17 does not properly initialize the (1) AFSStoreStatus, (2) AFSStoreVolumeStatus, (3) VldbListByAttributes, and (4) ListAddrByAttributes structures, which might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive memory information by leveraging access to RPC call traffic.
The weakness was presented 05/13/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openafs.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-4536 since 05/05/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 1.6.17 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
