Linux Kernel up to 3.8.8 kernel/events/core.c perf_swevent_init perf_event_open numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.8.8 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function perf_swevent_init of the file kernel/events/core.c. The manipulation of the argument perf_event_open with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The perf_swevent_init function in kernel/events/core.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.9 uses an incorrect integer data type, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted perf_event_open system call.

The weakness was shared 04/12/2013 by Trinity as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2094 since 02/19/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by sd and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68854 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2013-2524)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166012 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2013:0951-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.8.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84196), Tenable (68854) and Exploit-DB (25444). The entries 7738, 8176, 8568 and 8597 are related to this item.
