The CFNetwork Proxies subsystem in Apple iOS before 9.3.2, OS X before 10.11.5, and tvOS before 9.2.1 mishandles URLs in http and https requests, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 05/16/2016 by Alex Chapman with Context Information Security as HT206567 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1801 since 01/13/2016. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:

An information leak existed in the handling of HTTP and HTTPS requests. This issue was addressed through improved URL handling.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91311 (Apple TV < 9.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122912 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.5 and Security Update 2016-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-05-16-4)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
