A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 9.3.1 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component IOAcceleratorFamily. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
IOAcceleratorFamily in Apple iOS before 9.3.2, OS X before 10.11.5, tvOS before 9.2.1, and watchOS before 2.2.1 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via a crafted app.
The weakness was presented 05/16/2016 by Ian Beer (moony li) with Google Project Zero as HT206568 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1813 since 01/13/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A null pointer dereference was addressed through improved validation.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91228 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c.
Upgrading to version 9.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (91228) and Exploit-DB (39924). See 87425, 87434, 87435 and 87436 for similar entries.
