The bug was discovered 05/09/2013. The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2013 by Gjoko Krstic (LiquidWorm) with Zero Science Lab as File 121634 as confirmed exploit (Packetstorm). The advisory is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0237 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as highly functional. It is possible to download the exploit at zeroscience.mk. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-content/plugins/newsletter/subscription/page.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13205 (WordPress Versions Prior to 3.5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 3.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at plugins.svn.wordpress.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
