librsvg up to 2.40.11 SVG Document input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in librsvg up to 2.40.11. Affected is an unknown part of the component SVG Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

librsvg before 2.40.12 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop, stack consumption, and application crash) via cyclic references in an SVG document.

The weakness was disclosed 05/20/2016 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-7558. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87543 (FreeBSD : librsvg2 -- denial of service vulnerability (d6c51737-a84b-11e5-8f5c-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 296022 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 29.5.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 2.40.12 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (87543). The entries 87551, 93589, 96532 and 103297 are pretty similar.
